RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
