Sheffield Wednesday Faces a 'Significant Problem', Says New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

The Championship club's current difficulties represent a a "serious issue" and the new football authority is aiming to acquire authority to look into club affairs in comparable cases, the newly appointed chairman the regulator has announced.

In a wide-ranging interview, the regulator, who was named to the position this week, expressed "sympathy" towards Wednesday's fanbase.

Kogan met with four supporter groups associated with the South Yorkshire club this week.

The team have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in 2025, with the club missing wage payments on several different times, including in the autumn.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a significant problem for EFL and a substantial concern for English football," the chairman stated.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the iconic names for football in England and recently we have met fan representatives.

"We are seeking authority... which will enable us to take Wednesday and comparable cases referred to us if they require examination and acted upon."

Economic Challenges and Ownership Situation

Wednesday's embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri indicated in the summer he would be prepared to relinquish control at their home ground, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with potential new owners.

Delayed salary payments on time in earlier this year resulted in restrictions being imposed by the league officials in summer, stopping Wednesday from completing any transfers or loans for the following recruitment periods, although those limitations were removed in August.

Official's Viewpoint

Kogan said: "Our role exists to serve the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a regional establishment that has existed throughout their lifetimes in multiple situations.

"I completely understand the team's plight, as I do for every team that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the fans themselves."

When asked if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are considered unfit, the chairman responded: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we assemble the facts and know what's going on, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the oversight body would choose to cooperate with proprietors.

"The last thing what we want to do is begin intervening in an specific team, an individual owner, without being able to work with that proprietor to address the issues that the club's facing and the owner's facing," the regulator explained.

"In actuality, when you review the record of the sport, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been some owners, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the approach they have taken toward their teams and eventually refuse to accept accountability for the future."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The regulator engaged officials from numerous teams to lay out the remit of the authority recently and insisted it was a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "high level of engagement" from the lower divisions to the top flight.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear rapidly," the chairman stated.

"And that's what nobody wants in the terms of English football is a substantial accomplishment - we must maintain momentum.

"Substantial financial resources coming into football and has come into football for the past two decades, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to take a really clear view on challenges and obviously, of the next two or three years."

Elite Division Worries

The Premier League opposed the creation of a regulator because of fears of a negative impact on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the chairman responded: "I completely endorse the success and growth as an commercial operation of the elite league.

"I of all people understand the apprehension regarding damaging the division as a high-quality offering of England. But concurrently, if you talk to the Premier League after the recent gathering, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, indeed, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Political Connections

The regulator remains subject to a "thorough examination" by the public appointments commissioner after he acknowledged providing funds to the opposition group in recent years.

The official donated money to Culture Secretary the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the government leader.

"I've been completely open about my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," Kogan said.

"I am presently disconnected from any sort of politics."
