Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
